Psychotic Disorders

Specialized Evaluation, Treatment & Long-Term Stability at Access Psychiatry

Psychotic disorders can have a huge impact on thought, perception, and behavior. At Access Psychiatry, we offer competent, compassionate care that blends accurate diagnosis, effective symptom management, and a strong focus on rehabilitation and quality of life. Dr. Mapendo Karen Safari has broad experience in treating people living with psychotic disorders through individualized, evidence-based treatment.

We offer complete psychiatric evaluation, medication management, and follow-up care for children, adolescents, and adults in person (Glen Burnie and Laurel, MD) and through telemedicine.

What are Psychotic Disorders

Psychotic disorders are abnormalities of thought, perception, and reality testing. Symptoms can include hallucinations (seeing or hearing things that aren’t there), delusions (fixed incorrect beliefs), disorganized thinking or speech, and problems with motivation or expressing emotions. Many people do great with proper treatment and are quite stable and productive.

We specialize in:

Schizophrenia
A persistent illness with ongoing signs and symptoms, including hallucinations, delusions, disorganized thinking, and negative feelings (decreased emotional expressiveness or motivation). Consistent treatment adherence, as well as early intervention, are keys to long-term well-being and preventing relapses.

Schizoaffective Disorder
Schizophrenia symptoms plus mood disorder symptoms (depression or mania). People can have psychotic symptoms without having mood episodes. They need to get treatment for the psychosis and the mood stability at the same time.

Brief Psychotic Disorder
Sudden onset of psychotic symptoms (hallucinations, delusions, disorganized speech) lasting from one day to less than one month, sometimes precipitated by acute stress.  Prompt support enables many people to make a full recovery.

Delusional Disorder

Characterized by one or more delusions (such as persecutory, grandiose, or jealous beliefs), lasting at least one month, without prominent hallucinations or other significant psychotic symptoms. Outside of the deluded theme, functioning may stay largely intact.

Psychotic Disorder Due to a Substance

Psychotic symptoms that arise during, or shortly after, substance use or withdrawal. Treatment involves management of acute symptoms and prevention of recurrence as well as treating the substance usage.

Our Care Approach

We believe effective treatment is more than symptom control, it’s whole-person recovery:

Comprehensive Psychiatric Evaluation: Detailed history and symptom assessment to exclude medical factors and arrive at an appropriate diagnosis.

Medication Management: Expert prescribing of antipsychotics and other drugs, with careful titration, monitoring for side effects, and regular follow-up. We choose the lowest effective dose and employ techniques like GeneSight testing when it will help.

Adherence and Relapse Prevention: Information concerning the need for consistent therapy, symptoms of potential relapse, and practical advice on maintaining stability.

Supportive Therapy & Psychoeducation: Assisting individuals and families to understand the disease better, decrease stigma, learn coping skills, and form a strong support network.

Holistic Approach: Addressing co-occurring disorders like sleep, mood, substance use, and lifestyle factors that affect overall functioning.

Our goal is to give you the knowledge, resources, and ongoing assistance you need to focus on your talents and your goals in life.

Why Continuous, Timely Care is Important

Psychotic symptoms that are not treated or are inconsistently treated can have a serious impact on relationships, career, education, and independence. With proper care, many people have fewer symptoms, fewer hospitalizations, and greater daily functioning. Recovery is not a one-size-fits-all journey we will go at your pace.

You or someone you love deserves professional, courteous care. Help is accessible, and genuine change is attainable.
